I’m not saying the story is nonsensical, but it is presented poorly.) After completing the game in about twenty-five hours, my final reaction to Lightning Returns is not one of anger or disappointment, but merely ambivalence. (And yes, before you ask, I have read the datalogs and done plenty of research. Now, four years after the release of Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning appears before us one final time in a last-ditch effort to prove her worth and provide closure to one of the most convoluted RPG stories in recent memory. Its sequel attempted to tip the scales by featuring a greater emphasis on player choice, but the plot continued to veer off the rails thanks to an over-reliance on time travel and “paradoxes.” Both games were deeply flawed, but still enjoyable, and I truthfully consider myself a big fan of the series. The first game in her trilogy was an audiovisual spectacle, but faced heavy criticism for its linearity and poorly-explained plot. So it’s ironic, perhaps, that the Final Fantasy XIII heroine of the same name has instead done the opposite lingering throughout an entire console generation. The last entry in the XIII triology, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released on both Xbox 360 and PS3 on February 11th in North America and February 14th in Europe.Lightning is, by definition, a brilliant flash that leaves as quickly as it arrives. Keep an eye out on the real deal, though. Update: It seems the demo’s availability was a mistake on Microsoft’s end, as it has since been taken down. You can also bag yourself a Siegfried garb which can be used in the full version of Lightning Returns if you submit your battle score from the demo to ‘Outerworld services’. If that’s the case, then it will offer a little taster of the Style Change battle system and a peek at the kind of environments you’ll find yourself in during the full game. The demo presumable contains the same content as the Japanese trial version of the game released last November on PSN. It is also currently not available on the Playstation store. While it hasn’t cropped up on the website yet, it can be found it through your 360’s dashboard. As with most demos it is free to download but it appears you need a Gold account to be able to access it, so those who aren’t subscribed will miss out.

The demo for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is now available on Xbox Live.
